Interview I did at Smashwords

I did an Interview at Smashwords a while back and I had it on my old blog. I figured I'd put it here now.

Interview with JW Metcalf

When did you first start writing?

My earliest memory of writing was when I was seven years old. I had to write a story for school. I loved it. I wrote a story about an octopus. I still have it to this day. That was when I knew I wanted to be a writer. It took me a long time to get myself motivated to write. Life always gets in the way and if you don't find the time, you will never achieve your goals.

What's the story behind your latest book?

When a successful business man is found dead in his home, the police rule it a suicide. However, not everyone is convinced that a man who seemed to have it all would take his own life. Private investigator, Tony Gavel, is hired to find out the truth of the matter. Tony's investigation leads him from the carefully manicured lawns of the suburbs to the seedy underbelly of the Big City. As he delves futher into the case , he uncovers secrets, lies, and danger at every turn. When an attempt is made on his own life, his friend and former partner, Officer Dwight O'Toole, gives Tony until the end of the week to solve the case before the police take over. Can Tony crack the case before the clock runs out, or will his unstoppable pursuit of justice land him in the morgue as the latest victim ?

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?

I love the creation aspect of writing. Making a world that I see in my mind come to life on the written page. That to me is the best part of writing. If others can enjoy it, so much the better.

What are you working on next?

I've been working on the 2nd book in the Tony gavel PI series. This one is called Gone Fishing. Tony Gavel, A PI living in Big City, decided to head up to his cabin in the woods after his latest case. He was bruised and battered and need some time to recuperate. During a trip to the store he noticed a wanted poster about Doogan 'The Ear' Ashe, an escaped serial killer, was last seen within the surrounding woods. Tony decides to go look for him to collect the reward money. After coming face to face with Doogan, Tony was lucky to escape the encounter alive. During the story, Tony's old friend Sheriff Josh Myers was found floating in the lake. All the evidence points to Doogan's handy work. Now the clock is ticking for Tony to find Doogan and solve josh's murder.

Who are your favorite authors?

My all time favorite author is Jim Butcher. He writes the Dresden Series. If you never read any of his books, I would suggest them. I love the Stephen King books as well. I recently read some indie authors that I think are really good. Author Michael Hicks. He writes the In Her Name series as well as The Harvest trilogy. Another is Joe Madden. He wrote The Starhawk Chronicles and is currently working on the next installment. I suggest both these guys if you like good Sci-fi.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?

This is an easy one. My family. I love my wife and kids and would do anything for them. I try to be the best dad/husband I can be. It's easy to get up and work so that their lives can be the way they want it to be.

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?

I enjoy playing video games mostly. Playing with the kids as well. I like photography and have other various interests.

How do you discover the ebooks you read?

From suggestions from friends mostly. I hang out and know a lot of readers and they are always recommending something. I also like to browse and read the blurbs of books. If it sounds interesting I would give it a shot.

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?

It was the story of Puffy the Octopus. I wrote it and illustrated it when I was in third grade. The title of it was The Sad Octopus. Puffy was always sad because the other fish didn't like him because he was clumsy and always dropped the ball when they played. One day a shark came across the fish and scared them. Puffy came to the rescue and fought the shark and scared him away. All the fish loved him after that and made Puffy happy because he found new friends.
